State of the Orioles

What’s up Birdland? Hope everyone hasn’t abandoned all hope in the O’s because we certainly haven’t. It’s been a tough stretch, sure, but the 2015 season is far from over.

Here we sit, 127 games into the longest 6-months in sports, and the Orioles post a (63-64) record. One game below .500, and the numbers don’t lie. The O’s have been an average team this season. There’s no point in sugar-coating it anymore; inconsistent across the board and in all phases. But the fact that they still only sit 2.5 games out of the 2nd Wild Card seed is something you should be excited about.

Do we have the toughest schedule in the league the rest of the way? Yes. Are injuries mounting and becoming a concern? Yes. Has the rotation disappointed in their attempt to recreate their 2nd half magic from a year ago? Yes. All of the above. But here we are.

Texas currently holds the 2nd AL Wild Card seed, and that’s where the O’s find themselves this weekend. Going (1-7) in back-to-back series against Minnesota and Kansas City have left much of Birdland throwing in the towel. But how many of you will scramble back to your seats if Buck rallies the troops in Arlington?

That being said, this weekend is critical for the O’s. They need to play well, and they need to get off on the right track tonight. Supposed future-ace Kevin Gausman is on the bump, and the team needs him to live up to expectations. I fully believe he can, and I hope he will.

The rest of the way, the Orioles will play the AL East-leading Blue Jays 7 times, and the AL Wild Card-leading Yankees 6 times. This includes a 7-game homestand at Oriole Park at Camden Yards to close out the season, and the Birds post a much better record at home (37-25) than on the road (26-39). They’ll certainly have to earn it, but if the O’s can put some in the #WinColumn, they’ll be chipping away at both the division and Wild Card lead.

Keep the faith, Birdland. 35 games to-go, and this is baseball; anything can happen!
